DIY Info – Do It Yourself

Choosing Your RV Awning Replacement Fabric

If you decide it’s time to tend to your RV awning and get some replacement fabric, you must do your research ahead of time. Decide if vinyl or acrylic is best for your unique needs. Regardless of the type of fabric you decide.

There are a lot of fabrics advertised online.  Not all fabrics are the same.  Most fabric is designed with a single-season life.  Meaning, that the manufacturer expects that you will change your canopy each season and they build for that quality.  Other fabrics have either a 2, 5, or 10-year warranty. Invest in a product that is designed to hold up against rot, mildew, wear and tear, sun rays, and moisture.

Additionally, make sure the fabric fits your specific awning make and model, and always ask about the warranty before you buy.

Installing Your RV Awning Replacement Fabric

When it comes to installing the canopy, having professional help is not only a good idea, but it will save you vital time, potential damage, bodily harm, serious frustration, and money.

Even if you are a handyman pro with the confidence to do it yourself, the third time you do this it will go a lot better.  If you’re not 100% sure what you’re doing, you could damage the hardware of your RV awning while trying to remove the fabric from the frame. Threading the new fabric into the rolling tube is a delicate and learned process that needs to be done with patience and the utmost care.  Encountering hurdles in this process can lead to damaging the new canopy, causing damage to the RV, and being spring loaded, you can cause serious injury to your body, hands, and face. If you do attempt your own repair, heed all the manufacturer’s advice and read all manuals thoroughly.
